U.S. Sen. John Boozman recognized the county from the floor of the Senate on Sept. 13 in honor of it becoming the first Purple Heart county in Arkansas. Sen. Boozman’s remarks were published in the Congressional Record, the official transcript for Congressional proceedings, and will be preserved for future generations by the Library of Congress.

County Judge Terry Ott signed a proclamation on Nov. 10, 2015, adding Marion County to the Purple Heart Trail, a non-continuous system of counties, cities, highways, bridges and monuments that recognize the men and women who have earned the Purple Heart, the U.S. military decoration awarded to those wounded or killed while serving. Signs denoting Marion County’s Purple Heart affiliation were placed at county lines in July, and a ribbon-cutting and dedication was held in September at Yellville’s City Park.

“Marion County’s unwavering support of the heroic actions of our Purple Heart recipients stands as a reflection of the appreciation and gratitude of its residents,” Sen. Boozman said during his remarks from the Senate floor. “On behalf of all Arkansans, I echo the sentiments of the citizens of Marion County in saying how grateful we are for our veterans and their willingness to serve their country. … I would like to take this opportunity to applaud Marion County for publicly recognizing our veterans and Purple Heart recipients by becoming Arkansas’ first Purple Heart county. Arkansas is proud that our local communities are paying respect to our veterans and standing behind them.”
