– U.S. Sen. John Boozman, seeking a secondterm in office, visited the new Nevada County Jail as part of his “Every Second Counts” tour.
Boozman said he’s touring the state, visiting with law enforcement, first responders and fire departments to assess their needs and see how he could help. He lauded the groups saying theirs is a hard, and often thankless job. He pointed out they seldom have the resources to purchase the equipment they need and pledged to see what he could do to help via the grant process.
He toured the jail, along with several county officials, and said it’s one of the best county jails he’s seen on his trip around the state. He lauded Nevada County Sheriff Danny Martin for having such a state-of-the-art facility and was surprised when Martin told him how local voters passed two taxes with 83 percent of the vote. Martin pointed out how the jail’s design makes it difficult for outsiders to bring contraband into the jail for inmates. This is done by utilizing video visiting, which must be scheduled. Martin continued, telling Boozman family members of inmates can put money into a concession account which allows the prisoners to buy certain items, such as candy and e-cigarettes, adding if enough money is deposited into the account, the funds can be used to pay an inmate’s bond.
